Perry is a Chicago native who was born to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback) Her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. However, her parents did not want her to pursue acting until she became an adult fearing the effect of stress. Perry, who was too timid to perform in the high school, started to act in the theater at Northwestern University because she wanted to meet new people. Perry managed to get minor TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent following her graduation. Homesickness, however, caused her to move back to California to return, where she started working in the stage. Her mother and she appeared on Broadway as a couple as part of The Other Place, in 2013. She appeared in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie as well as Kevin McKidd. This was staged in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry starred in the drama's nine episodes from 2016 on ABC's drama The Family. In 2017, Perry had an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. The actress was also featured on her role on the CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger than Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. The role was selected by auditions, even having a strong connection with it.
